Professional Medical Coding Training Program Description

The length of this course is 80 hours and covers review of anatomy, medical terminology, ICD-9 diagnosis coding book, CPT procedure coding book, and HCPC Medicare coding book. The students are offered mid-term and pre-final practice exams with quizzes, homework, and timed tests. The session ends with a review / exam preparation class followed by an AAPC certification exam.

Course Objectives

At the completion of the program, the participant will:

• Identify key terms for coding, insurance, and reimbursement.
• Identify key compliance codes as they apply to coding.

• Match anatomical structures and systems to the chapters in CPT.
• Gain a working knowledge of ICD-9-CM coding conventions, format, signs, and symbols.

• Know how to code to the highest level of specificity.
• Have a working understanding of Supplementary ICD-9-Cm codes found in the V and E coding categories.

• Learn to navigate, identify symbols, and use the CPT and HCPCS books.
• Learn the correct documentation standards and criteria.
• Be able to identify the key components associate with various E/M codes and the requirements for meeting key component criteria for each.
• Gain a working knowledge of CPT surgery coding conventions for the following: separate procedures, starred procedures, add-on services, and modifier -51 exempt procedures.

• Gain an understanding of the various anesthesia services and be able to select the appropriate codes for the services rendered.
• Understand the concept of professional and technical components of radiology services.

• Be able to appropriately code for laboratory Panels and pathology services.
• Be able to apply all coding principles learned in the selection and reporting of the services listed in the Medicine chapter.
